Sustainable gems – an impossible dream?
For good reasons, we have become more and more aware of the environmental footprint which we leave after our existence on this earth and therefore I have an increasing number of customers who ask:Is there such a thing as fairtrade diamonds or other ethically sourced gems which do not harm the environment? The answer is YES, NO and DEFINITELY MAYBE... Recently I attended a talk by the “Indiana Jones of Gemmology” - Vincent Pardieu. The topic was sustainable mining of coloured gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies. This is actually a very complicated matter, as it turns out! Now,…28. February 2018
Interlinked wedding set
Wedding sets are a well-known concept in the US, where the big diamond engagement ring is paired with a smaller wedding ring, which fits up against the latter. A smart solution in order to have more space for rings on the other fingers. However, the wedding ring tends to turn autonomously around the finger even though it has often been designed to follow the specific shape of the engagement ring - to much irritation of the wearer. Solution: Interlink the two rings together like a hook and loop My wedding award winning set consists of a solitaire – The “Hiding…9. December 2017
Creating a buckle for the chasuble of Sct. Lukas'
Sometimes I get orders which fall outside the usual handcrafted jewellery which is created in my worshop – a task which requires my entire creative spectrum in order to find the most beautiful and elegant solution. I was presented to such an assignment when Bettina Christiansen, the priest at Sct Lukas Church at Frederiksberg, contacted me with a request to create a buckle for the new chasuble which was currently being sewn. "What's a chasuble?" You might ask. It is the often rather colorful cloak which the minister wears on top of her priestly robe at high mass. Often the…23. November 2017
Castens and coture
High stucco ceilings, chiming laughter, clinging glasses and glittering diamonds. Yes… participating at the Show of the Guilds at the prestigious Moltkes Mansion, the closest we get to real coture here in Denmark, is quite something. The difference being, that this isn’t a singular fashion house showing its latest designs, but representatives of a number of guilds, which have teamed up with the tailors guild. Apart from the tailors, the show features jewelers, furriers, saddle makers (no, they didn’t show saddles, but handcrafted leather bags) and milliners. Due to the high end nature of all these products the clientele was…13. September 2017
Can you trust a jeweller?
Currently the tabloids here are having a field day picking apart an issue from a Danish reality Show (Familien fra Bryggen). It’s all about a 1 carat diamond ring created by Mai Manniches company JEWLSCPH which failed to live up to the expectations of the customer (Cengiz Mads Salvarli). The whole thing has left me a bit worried, because it might create doubt about the honesty of the Danish jewellers and especially the price of a 1 carat diamond. Obviously I can never guarantee what my generally very honest and sensible colleagues do, but I CAN say a bit…30. July 2017
A new ring with old memories
Some years ago I created a ring for the Danish blogger, actor and It-girl Carla Michelsborg, also known as Carla Chloe. Carla is one of those scrumptious girls who always looks delicious and cheerful. The pouting duck faces are few and far between and she has no problems showing her silly, less photogenic sides – bless her. Carla as an elven princess, wearing the Le Fey tiara. She could probably play such a fairytale creature very well too... Like many others of my customers she came to me with an old ring which didn’t work for her, but which…27. June 2017
How old styles can inspire modern jewellery design
Recently we created a lovely set of earrings. That obviously happens fairly often, but these ones were sort of… special. They consisted of a double curl, sprouting from a diamond. I called them the “Rocaille ear studs” – and what on earth is a “Rocaille”? A bit of fonetical help here: Rocaille is pronounced [rokaj'] and it’s a design element roughly shaped like a shell. The rocaille describes a curve with a scalloped edge, which was widely used in the 18th century, when the baroque style turned into rococo - and yes: ROCOCO is named after the ROCAILLE. Rococo is…7. How to create a genuine magic wand
What if magic was real? What if Hogwards was an actual place and you HAD the chance of receiving the coveted letter by owl when turning 11? This is a very real day dream of many children as well as adults (albeit a bit late to hope for the 11-year letter). We have read the books, watched the movies, visited the Warner Bros Studios outside London and purchased the merchandise. And some take the day dream all the way and enroll in a Live Action Role Play (LARP) where they get to pretend and act the role as a student…9. May 2017
Heirloom redesign – celebration of mothers
Many of us feel deeply connected to the generations of our family which have gone before us. And therefore Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to commemorate and celebrate not only our own mother, but the mothers who came before her as well. This was the intent of my customer when she brought me 3 rings with diamonds: Her mothers wedding ring, her grandmothers wedding ring the ring her grandmother got, when she had given birth to her mother. All rings were in a rather bad state: They had never been built sturdy and the wear and tear of many…29. April 2017
