- A guide to an important detail

Few things are considered as carefully as the details surrounding a wedding. For most, it's a ”one shot”, and then everything has to be as ”perfect” as it can possibly be.

One of the details is the bride's jewellery, where the earrings are often particularly important, as they bring life and movement to an outfit that might otherwise feel a little stiff (as many wedding dresses are actually quite structured!).

When it comes to deciding on jewellery for the big day, the dress is the absolute most important starting point. If the neckline is high, you might choose smaller and more simple earrings, while a deep neckline or even a strapless design invites large, more dramatic earrings that can balance all the bare skin. – Alternatively, it's perfectly fine to wear both earrings and a necklace together.

Crown Princess Mary's wedding earrings

Teardrop earrings are classics – especially for weddings, and HRH Crown Princess Mary wore just such a pair, made by the Danish jewellery company Dulong, to her wedding. I had, of course, immediately spotted them when I – like so many other Danes – was glued to the screen, watching the royal wedding. Even then, I had the thought that it was a classic that I would absolutely love to create my own take on.

The shapes – the double drop, which has so much life because they move independently of each other, are very beautiful, I think. But personally, I liked the details of these earrings less – I think they are a bit clunky and the setting for the pearl (which is inspired by a snowdrop) is perhaps more lily-like and could have followed the pearl's shape a bit more beautifully. On the other hand, there are some BIG diamonds in these earrings, and you can never say anything negative about that 😉

Earrings for a very special bride

A few years later, a customer – who was due to wear a strapless dress – asked me to create a pair of earrings that were so large and beautiful that they would render all other jewellery superfluous – and preferably teardrop-shaped, like the Crown Princess’s. A fantastic commission, which resulted in some truly enchanting, asymmetrical silver earrings set with white sapphires and pearls.

Fleur de lis – The ultimate bridal earrings

In the end, the inevitable happened: I decided it was time to create my ”con amore” version of the classic double teardrop earrings, and they had to be made from the finest materials: white gold and diamonds, as well as the largest and most beautiful teardrop-shaped pearls I could find. As mentioned, the basic design is classic, with pavé-set diamonds, and – somewhat atypically for me – I’ve opted for a completely symmetrical design reminiscent of a fleur-de-lys motif. But the bubbles and curls are still there – otherwise it wouldn’t be a proper Castens.

But now that was *my* version, so these earrings got an elegant ”swing” in the drop shape, which ended in double curls – which was also the reason they ended up being called ”Fleur de Lis”, because it's reminiscent of a widely used French motif inspired by the lily. Read more about Fleur de Lis here. And of course my earrings have bubbles that connect, create transitions and life.

The diamonds are nowhere near as large as Crown Princess Mary's, but I think one can also ”make do” with the total carat of diamonds found in these earrings. The earrings are composed of three parts: the stud with the largest diamonds, the frame with the pavé-set diamonds, and then the pearl itself. The fact that there are three elements that can move independently of each other gives plenty of life and sparkle with every movement and thus also life to the wearer's face and especially her eyes.
