How to order custom jewellery

If you've fallen for that special Castens style and want me to create a custom piece of jewellery, I want to start by thanking you for your trust. I will do everything I can to make your jewellery dream come true.

Design phase - what do you dream of?

When we meet for the first time, we'll start with inspiration. It's a great help if you bring along pictures of jewellery you like – this could be from our website or jewellery from other goldsmiths. Perhaps you've made a small sketch yourself. Or perhaps your inspiration comes from somewhere completely different: a work of art, nature, or the soft, flowing shapes of smoke. Everything is welcome.

Then we'll talk about what it is you're drawn to - and why. If there is a story, a feeling or a memory attached to the jewellery, I would love to hear about it. The more I understand what matters to you, the better I can shape a piece of jewellery that feels right in your gut.

Based on our conversation, I start drawing. We go back and forth between ideas and drawing. Sometimes the right design emerges almost immediately - other times it takes several sketches before the mould falls into place. Many people only realise what they really want when they see it take shape on paper. That's why this phase is so important: this is where the dream slowly becomes something you can see, feel and fall in love with.

Materials - and maybe something
Old gold?

We also need to discuss materials – weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of one over another, and you need to have decided which gemstones (if any) you prefer. This is where a lot can be adjusted to meet your budget. You will always receive a quote for the price of the jewellery itself, but sometimes I cannot provide a price on the spot; perhaps I first need to find specific gemstones from my suppliers. In such cases, I will contact you afterwards by email with a quote.

This is also where, if you have your own stones or old gold, you can have them factored in. We do this in the following way: First, we find the price of your new piece of jewellery. Then, we find out how much money you have for your gold/silver, and that is deducted from the price of your new piece of jewellery. Read more about how we use old gold here. (You can pay a maximum of 50% of the price of your new jewellery with old metal and stones).

THE ORDERING PHASE

Once we have settled on a design, materials and price, we ask for a non-refundable deposit of 50%. You will then receive a receipt plus access to your order via our website, where you will find an illustration and all the info needed for me to create your new piece of jewellery. If you want, you can also get a copy of the drawings we created together.

What about the price?

Isn't it expensive to get something custom-designed? Yes and no. Custom-designed items are certainly more expensive than mass-produced goods from China, and also a little more expensive than the jewellery we already have in stock. On the other hand, jewellery from our workshop isn't more expensive than fancy brand-name items, where you pay a lot for the name – but which are still mass-produced.

We always recommend that you take a look around our site to get a feel for the price level.

When we custom design a piece of jewellery from scratch, the design process starts at DKK 5,000.
The amount covers the development of the design itself – meaning the creative process, the sculptor's work with the adaptation, and the many hours that requires.

Then comes the cost of materials and the time we spend making the jewellery.

If we feel that the design could also be of interest to others, we may choose to take a mould of it. In that case, your piece of jewellery will be engraved with a 1 and accompanied by a certificate confirming that it is the original (#1) of the design. In this situation, the design start is reduced by 1,000 DKK.

The production phase

We will now order the agreed materials from a range of different, reliable suppliers. When they arrive, your jewellery will be created by me personally or by one of my skilled employees. The production time is normally between 6-10 weeks, depending on a variety of different factors.

ATTENTION. If you need the jewellery made faster, a rush fee will be added to the price.

Delivery

When your jewellery is finished, we will contact you so you can come by the shop.,
Collect your dream jewellery and pay the remaining balance.
One of the best parts of our work is experiencing that moment when you see and try on your new piece of jewellery for the very first time - that's when it all makes sense.
If the jewellery is to be sent to you, we ask for payment via bank transfer. Once the amount has been received, we will send it insured by post or FedEx. You can read more about shipping and delivery under our terms of trade and our Online shop terms and conditions.
