Carla is playing the elf (she would be good in that role too) with The Fae diadem
She came to me, like so many others, with an old ring that was not functioning optimally, but which had great sentimental value. The tiny diamond solitaire had been a gift from her now late grandfather, and she now wanted me to make a ring for her incorporating this diamond. That way, it would be possible for her to carry the memory of her dearly beloved grandfather with her wherever she went.
Carla liked the symmetrical and soft simplicity that a ring with a large cabochon-cut gemstone flanked by two small diamonds has. As the centre stone, she chose a beautiful, light green serpentine, which she said reminded her of her grandfather's green eyes. I suggested enhancing the soft look of the design by setting the diamond and a matching sister in beads and then adding a further four beads to create cohesion and a little life – and she liked that idea very much.
The ring was to be made of gold, which suits Carla's golden skin and blonde hair beautifully. Such a ring is always made of two basic elements: a ring shank and a head setting. Here, the ring shank itself is ready and adjusted to Carla's size, and the setting is on its way.
The setting for such a cabochon-cut gemstone consists of a base, in which I often cut a hole to let light through, and then the bezel, which wraps around the stone itself. There needs to be a wide, lavish bezel, so quite a lot of gold has to be soldered together here with hard solder.
After sawing the excess bottom off the setting, it has been filed and rounded off before being soldered onto the ring shank, after which the bubbles are added.
When setting gemstones, it is important to secure the ring thoroughly, because you often need both hands in the process. The leather protects the polished inside of the ring from being scratched while you press down on the ring to push the gold over the edges of the gemstones.
The result turned out really beautiful! Simple and symmetrical (not so typical for Castens’ designs) with small bubbles that create life and detail (very typical for Castens). I love green myself and therefore couldn't agree more with Carla's choice of centre stone.
Karin knows exactly how to turn memories into jewellery. The ring turned out completely as I had hoped, and a bit better really. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of my beloved grandfather, because it is made from a ring I received from him. He meant the world to me, and it's therefore absolutely brilliant to be reminded of him every time I look down at my ring finger.
