The old cut diamond

Right now this absolute beauty rests in our safe – an old cut oval or cushion shaped diamond. And what is “old cut" you ask? Well, these diamonds have somewhat fewer facets and usually also a smaller table = the flat top of the gem, than the standard brilliant cut we use today. If you don’t recognize the cut at the first glance, the lacking tip of the gem, which shows in a small circle seen through the diamond is a dead giveaway.

These diamonds are extremely charming with their somewhat old fashioned look and therefore also have quite few fans. Some of these also call this antique style cut “mine cut” but they are not to be confused with “rose cut” with even fewer facets. It is rather rare to come across new diamonds with this cut – most of them actually ARE old / antique.

We have done our best, but the pictures we have taken of this gem fail to show its beauty and so we have made a small video. That is much better, but like so many things in real life, experiencing the real deal beats everything:

The diamond weighs 0.71 ct, measures 5.47 mm x 4.5 mm and is of an I / SI quality, which means that it has a slight yellowish tint to it – at least when seen on white paper. Experienced live, it just seems to be a somewhat warm white. Read more about diamonds and how to grade them here.

And so what to do with such a diamond? Well, a simple choice would be a solitaire with a conical setting on an elegant ring shank like this one:

However, so many other possibilities await this beauty! Here are some other examples of possible designs:

If you (like we) have fallen in love, you are in luck. In spite of this being a rather large diamond of almost three quarters of a carat, we sell it for only 17.000 DKK. And of cause we would absolutely LOVE to build a new piece of jewellery to hold it!
